Trump May be Unstoppable
...at least as far as the Republican nomination is concerned. Possibly the general election, too. The only candidate from the Democratic side who won't play his game is Sanders. And make no mistake, Trump is the best at that game, and anyone who is trapped into playing it with him will lose. Ask Marco Rubio, the darling of the GOP "establishment", how getting into Trump's playground-bully game is working out for him.
Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone lays out the sad story in the Feb 24 issue.
It turns out we let our electoral process devolve into something so fake and dysfunctional that any half-bright con man with the stones to try it could walk right through the front door and tear it to shreds on the first go. And Trump is no half-bright con man, either. He's way better than average.
The denigration of education, rational thought, and moderation that Ronald Reagan rode to the White House will soon have this country in its worst danger since the War of 1812.
When Trump is nominated for the Republicans, and should Hillary finish cobbling together whatever eldritch spells and foul potions and superdelegates she needs to be anointed on the Democratic side, know this: if you stay home in a fit of pique, you doom the country to Trump... and therefore, destruction. That is no exaggeration. As Paul Campos said here:
Speaking of Hillary Clinton not making lefties of various stripes quiver with that very special feeling, it’s just seems bizarre that after the last fifteen years people of even the vaguest progressive persuasion broadly defined could care about things like how a particular politician makes them “feel” about casting their vote. The coming presidential election, for those of us in this category, will consist of ordering one of three things for dinner: pizza, Indian food, or anthrax. For me Sanders is pretty good Indian food, while HRC on her worst days is Pizza Hut pizza, but the choice between Pizza Hut and anthrax is not a choice in any conceivable sense of the word, and having any sort of argument about this in 2015 as opposed to 2000 seems really ridiculous.
I will be blunter and less diplomatic than Paul: get the f* over it! Vote for Hillary if she's in the D box. Trump must be stopped, that is the #1 priority. We of the left opened this door in 2000 with our collective insanity over Nader. Without Nader, Scalia never gets to pick W. This time around, If we invite the Beast in through the door we opened in 2000, instead of nailing it shut, then before anyone even bothers to cancel the 2020 election, Russia is going to look like Denmark compared to the USA.
