Boy Scouts Move to Delegate Discrimination

Didn't the Boy Scouts of America get a lot of nice publicity last week?  Headlines said things like "Boy Scouts Move Closer To Ending Ban On Gay Adults" (HuffPo) They say they will end the national ban on openly gay volunteer leaders.  The change still has to be ratified by the Scouts' National Executive Board on July 27, but it is widely expected to become policy.

National ban.  What they are doing is, allowing local units to set their own policies.  Does this sound familiar?  During the run-up to the Supreme Court's Obergefell decision last month, what did we keep hearing from the bigots who went to any effort at all to disguise their homophobia?  "Let the states decide."  In other words, every person's rights should be subject to majority rule, and the minorities can fend for themselves.

In the legal arena, that is one reason we have the constitution.  Protection of minorities from the tyranny of the majorities.  The BSA gets a lot of special treatment in our legal system, for no discernible reason.  It's unconscionable that they are not held to the same standards as the rest of the polity.
