Still Boycotting the Scouts
The Boy Scouts, that is. (Girl Scouts rock! Two boxes of Thin Mints? Yes, please! THAT'S LUNCH!)
Today a Scout parent selling their popcorn at the office told me, but it's all better now! They allow LGBTQ leaders!
Well... no they don't! They no longer forbid them, that's true. But it's not the same thing at all. The BSA have decided to duck right out of making any decision, and explicitly defer the rights of any minority to local majorities, however neolithic those might be.
From their release last July when they rolled out the non-change:
Chartered organizations will continue to select their adult leaders and religious chartered organizations may continue to use religious beliefs as criteria for selecting adult leaders, including matters of sexuality. This change allows Scouting’s members and parents to select local units, chartered to organizations with similar beliefs, that best meet the needs of their families. This change also respects the right of religious chartered organizations to choose adult volunteer leaders whose beliefs are consistent with their own.
So the more bigoted an area of the country it is, the more likely it is to have a Council that bans LGBTQ leadership.
And, in case you were wondering, the BSA national policy on atheists remains unchanged: God or GTFO.
I'll get my popcorn from Orville Redenbacher, thanks anyway.
