Opening Day!
The Orioles opened at home, as they do. This year, the Blue Jays have come to town. A fun game with a great play by Toronto's Joey Bats: Man on first, one out, liner toward the RF corner and the runner commits to trying to score from first. But Bautista makes a diving catch and then lobs a throw to first to double the runner off and send it to extra innings!
Plays like this are why we watch baseball. It stands to reason that about half of them will be made by the "wrong" team. O well. Because in the top of the 11th, Machado handles a grounder up the 3rd base line that was hit so hard it was sure to be a double. He backhands the ball and falls to the ground by the bag, then comes up on one knee and throws a strike to first to get the batter by a step.
And finally, and fittingly, in the bottom of the 11th, the Orioles went on to win on a "Trumbo Jumbo." walk-off solo homer. So the last two games we watched that counted were the Cubs winning the World Series and the Orioles winning on Opening Day.
Gotta love it.
