First....

With every day we move closer to inaugurating our own peculiarly American version of Adolf Hitler.  He may be focusing on Muslims before Jews but is otherwise not different in any very important ways.  So we may as well start thinking hard about how we survive the coming regime of evil, and how we help defend those more vulnerable.

We have all seen this, by Martin Niemöller:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me

This time around the order will be different.  But the sin of omission in Niemöller's piece cannot be ours.  We all have some level of privilege by virtue of not being in one or more of the targeted groups.  This is what it's for.

So I was tickled pink to see that this happened

A woman wearing a Make America Great Again Yankees hat started in on a Muslim woman in an Albuquerque supermarket:

“You’re a terrorist. Get out of here,” the woman, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, screamed at a female shopper wearing a hijab, a head covering worn by some Muslim women.

And then... and then... the staff and other customers rallied around the innocent Muslim shopper.  Screened her from the screeching xenophobe, accompanied her to the car, and got her safely off to home.  Police were called to deal with the wannabe Brown Shirt, but she had fled.

Kudos to all of them, and keep it up!  It's going to be a long four years.
