Today in Book Banning

Suppose my school library had a Muppets book written by Jim Henson (in his capacity as Kermit's ghostwriter) about how the lives of children all over the world might be improved.  The book was published by the UN.  And one of its points is, that some children live in poverty so let's think about what we can do to ameliorate that.  There's nothing objectionable you can find about this, is there?

Subversive!

So.  Anyway.

Today I found this story in the NY Daily News about Wisconsin school board member Mary Carney who wants this book banned.  Because it does not sufficiently emphasize American exceptionalism.  It's also too graphic about poverty, says Carney.

Bear in mind that all the illustrations are Muppets.  How graphic can it be?  Are some of the Muppet families unable to afford minivans and trips to Disney?

I suppose it could be worse.  She could be itching to go shoot them all in the head.

Some mornings it just doesn't seem worth it to gnaw through the leather straps.
