Spring? Forward?
Daylight Savings Time starts tomorrow [yes, Sunday morning, but tomorrow night. I know, I know. Yeesh, people.]. We will probably never be rid of this idiotic institution for the same reason we will never be rid of the plague of idiotic gun ownership in this country: it has a powerful lobby.
You can see from this NPR story that all the platitudes we're taught about this abomination are lies. Ben Franklin did not invent it. Farmers, it turns out, actually hate it. And it does not save energy - rather the opposite. No, the support for the annual clock change comes from the retail industry, plus things like golf courses: they want us awake and going out to patronize them for more hours all summer.
So of course, we all walk to the mall or the golf course. Don't we? No, of course not. We get in our cars and we drive and we piss the tiny sliver of energy savings from being able to turn lights on later right down the pipe, many times over. The costs are actually pretty sobering. Not to mention the carbon footprint.
I would love to learn of a way to passive-aggressively resist this.
