Mmm, Sausage

"Laws, like sausages, cease to inspire respect in proportion as we know how they are made."  --Though often attributed to Bismarck, this was actually penned by John Godfrey Saxe in 1869.*

USA Today just published a story about hot dogs, which I do enjoy and will probably continue to enjoy after this.

Cognitive dissonance be damned.

DNA analysis of a large sampling of hot dogs has found human DNA in about 2% of those tested, various meats in 10% of the "vegetarian" hot dogs tested, and what they demurely call "hygienic issues" in 14% of all hot dogs -- and a whopping 66% of vegetarian ones.

It turns out that "hygienic issues" means "non-harmful contaminants."  It's a mighty narrow span of items that seem to this layman to fit that category.

* -- There are many "quotes" sites on the Internet but the only one I have found that seems to have any rigor whatsoever about attributing them correctly is Wikiquote.  Word to the wise.
