Autos!

For a lot of bad but strong reasons, the American way of life is ruled by the private automobile.  The average cost (TCO) of a passenger sedan is over $17 per hour it is used.  That's cheaper than if we took taxis everywhere -- although not by much.  Still, taxis would be a lot safer.

We try very hard not to think about the death toll of our reliance on autos.  We still get all choked up, turn baseball games into religious events, and go bomb some brown people far away every time someone mentions 9/11.  Meanwhile, cars kill as many people as died on 9/11... every month.

This is downtown Rochester.

The red is parking.  The parking is mostly empty because there's not a lot to do in downtown Rochester.  There's not a lot to do because all the available spaces where fun things might have been built are taken up with parking.
