The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have unveiled their Women’s Movement. They offer you gals recipes and fashion tips for Game Day! They suggest Pinterest boards that might help! They offer to teach you the ins and outs of the game in a simpler way that your little ladybrains can handle! The Bucs call this initiative “RED.” The possible reasons why that truly makes sense range from hilarious to gross.
Last year I quit all support of the NFL, pending them making some progress on showing that they are capable of considering women as full-status humans. Admittedly, I only did this after the Ray Rice mess shoved the misogyny of professional* football into my face so hard it was leaking out the back of my neck. I said I would go back when the league demonstrated some kind of contrition about how it has been, or at least a credible change of direction.
I don’t think this retreat to a Mad Men-era view of how women and professional football can relate to one another is quite filling the bill. In fact, the morning after a GOP candidates’ debate over who hates women the most, I think the winner might just be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers!
* – “professional” football includes NFL, NCAA and, in Texas or Pennsylvania, high school varsity.
